Although artificial intelligence has been around for a while, things really got exciting when OpenAI’s ChatGPT was introduced last year. Even though some might argue Google was late to the party, the company didn’t take long to join. However, Google has integrated AI features into many of its products, such as Workspace and Search. It appears that Google is now trying to integrate some of its AI magic into Android Auto, mainly for the purpose of summarizing lengthy messages.
Strings discovered by the kind folks at 9to5 within the Google app version 14.52 (beta)Google has disclosed its intentions to use artificial intelligence to produce a concise synopsis of a “busy conversation.” Our understanding is that this would not replace the current feature of having the messages read aloud while driving, but rather enhance it.
That essentially clarifies its purpose, and we value Google’s disclosure that these AI-generated summaries may not always be accurate. A cynical mind, however, might wonder if something of this kind is really necessary considering the possibility that AI will misinterpret some crucial conversational context.
When the group chats are buzzing constantly and you don’t want every single message to be read aloud, this could be quite helpful. Regretfully, there isn’t a visual representation of these summaries at this time, but as the wider release approaches, that should become sufficiently evident. Regarding that, it’s still unclear when everyone will be able to access the feature.
There are already AI elements in the Android messaging experience, such as Magic Compose on Google Messages. However, this new integration takes a different approach, and users’ reactions may differ. Given the company’s advancements in AI capabilities this year, anticipate that 2024 will be an even busier year for the search engine behemoth.
Google is currently home to a number of intriguing AI projects, such as Help Me Write on Google Docs, AI building blocks, and Help Me Visualize on Slides. You can also customize the background of Google Meet calls. The company recently unveiled Gemini, its newest AI model, whose Nano trim is available on the Pixel 8 Pro and powers functions like Summarize in the Recorder app and Smart Replies in Gboard.
