The charitable arm of Google, Google.org, has announced a new program to assist nonprofits in utilizing generative AI technology for worthwhile projects.
The goal of the Google.org Accelerator: Generative AI program is to use generative AI to assist nonprofits in creating innovative responses to urgent social issues.
According to research from Google.org, generative AI may be useful for four out of five nonprofits, but only about half of them are currently utilizing it.
Google.org’s AI Accelerator
Google.org says the main challenges to AI adoption are a lack of tools, awareness, training, and funding. The six-month accelerator program is designed to support nonprofits in developing high-impact generative AI applications to address these challenges.
The chosen projects will encompass a broad spectrum of social impact endeavors, such as public benefit access, educational assistance for marginalized communities, disinformation campaigns, and refugee language translation.
Technical instruction, workshops, mentorship, and assistance from committed AI coaches will all be beneficial to program participants. Additionally, more than $20 million in funding for nonprofit participants’ projects has been made public by Google.org.
The potential of generative AI to support social impact projects was highlighted by Annie Lewin, Director of Global Advocacy at Google.org, who said: “Generative AI can help social impact teams be more productive, creative, and effective in serving their communities.” In fact, those who receive funding from Google.org report that AI enables them to complete their tasks at almost half the cost and in a third of the time.
About eighteen months ago, when the technology first came to light, people were worried about two things: its potential for unchecked power and its effects on human labor. On the other hand, the accelerator program at Google.org shows how businesses around the globe can use AI for good.
