Choose a niche in which you have something to give.
In marketing, it’s a popular rule to choose a niche audience to speak to. In the world of motivational speaking, however, choosing a niche of expertise is not enough. You have to choose a niche in which you have something to give, which is quite different. To motivate you have to convey new states of mind to the audience and to do this it’s not enough to know the topic but you must also have experience in that field. For example, I chose resilience because during my life I had a very strong experience with illness and disability and these allowed me to develop this resource. If you are a woman manager you could talk to those women who want to get to the top in their profession. If you are a sportsman you could talk about motivation to those who love sports as much as you do.
Communicate by speaking to the heart and not the head.
The head plans but the heart decides the path you will take. This is why to positively influence your audience you must speak using images, metaphors and stories.
Give something to the audience and don’t go on stage to take something from the audience. Remember that at the end of your speech those who leave the room must have taken more from you than they gave you. It doesn’t matter if they paid to hear you and it doesn’t matter if you are there to sell something. Those who leave the room should go home enriched than when they entered.
Talk about you.
Some motivational speakers know how to use stories and metaphors very well and often use statistics or tell anecdotes. This is all very well but remember that people are more impressed by testimonials than cold numbers. If there is something in your story that can serve as an example, tell it even if it is related to intimate aspects of your life.
Open and close the speech with a question.
Opening a speech with a question helps to increase the curiosity of the listener. Closing a speech with a question can also be helpful in getting people to keep thinking about it once they get home. Sometimes you can close with a different question than the opening question. Other times it may be helpful to open and close with the same question giving the person a chance to look for their own answer.
