You can now use artificial intelligence (AI), which is gradually making its way into everything, to make your Instagram stories better. Instagram released new AI Backdrops in December that allow you to alter any image’s background to something interesting or whimsical.
You can upload a picture from your phone, for instance, erase the background, enter any kind of text prompt, and then sit back and watch the artificial intelligence do its thing. In a matter of seconds, you can stand in Paris, be surrounded by puppies, or be pursued by dinosaurs. It’s rather amazing. Right now, the Instagram AI feature is limited to users in the United States, so finding it will require some research. Here’s how to get things going, then.
How to Utilize AI Backdrops on Instagram
It’s just a few taps away to stand next to sunglasses-wearing cows. The only things stopping you are your creativity, the uploaded photo’s quality, and how well the AI performs.
To begin, launch the Instagram app on your Android or iPhone, take a new picture, or upload an existing one to an Instagram Story post. To give the AI more room to produce something entertaining, make sure the subject doesn’t occupy the entire screen. The new “AI Backdrop” button will appear at the top of the screen, adjacent to the buttons for resizing, text (Aa), and stickers, once you’re in the Story editing screen. The iPhone icon appears as a square with a person and a star inside of it.
The icon appears as a landscape photo with a star in the upper-right corner on Android devices.
When you use Meta for the first time, you’ll have to consent to its AI terms, which include granting Meta permission to use any photos you upload for the purpose of enhancing their systems. Make sure you’re alright with this before proceeding.
Instagram will first describe its new “create with AI” feature before scanning and analyzing your image and subsequently deleting the background.

You’ll notice a number of suggestion buttons, such as “surrounded by puppies” or “disco party,” after the background has been removed. You’ll also notice a text box where you can express your creativity and instruct the AI on what to produce.
Each AI prompt will have two images at the bottom of the screen. If you click the “redo” circle icon located near the bottom left, the GenAI will take another picture if you’re not happy with the outcome.
Continue doing this until you have an outcome that pleases you, at which point you can incorporate it into your Story. You can share the AI backdrop image with your friends and they can use your same AI prompt by clicking the “Try it” Instagram sticker. Alternatively, drag the sticker to the screen’s bottom to erase it.
The utilisation of Instagram’s implementation is quite simple, despite the occasionally subpar outcomes. Remember that this feature is still being rolled out, so please come back soon if you haven’t seen the AI backdrops button yet.
