Veteran theatre and movie performer Javed Khan Amrohi, best known for his appearances in the hit DD series Nukkad and movies like Lagaan and Chak De! India, passed away on Tuesday at a hospital in this city from lung failure, according to his director Ramesh Talwar.
He had just turned 70. The legendary actor was incapacitated for the previous year due to a respiratory condition. According to Talwar, he was receiving care at the Surya Nursing Home in a Mumbai neighbourhood.
Amrohi’s longtime friend and co-star in the film Lagaan, actor Akhilendra Mishra, revealed that he has been ill for a while.
Amrohi began his career in theatre after receiving his degree from the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), and he has since acted in over 150 movies and almost a dozen TV series in smaller but important roles.
Amrohi’s other significant works include the 1988 TV series Mirza Ghalib and popular 1990s movies like Hum Hain Rahi Pyaar Ke, Laadla, and Ishq. His most recent listed acting role was Pakya from the 1991 film Sadak in the 2020 sequel Sadak.
