“M3GAN” aims for a $20 million opening, but “Avatar 2” will still dominate

M3GAN, which stands for Model 3 Generative Android, is a terrifying animatronic doll that is about to take the movie industry by storm.

In its first weekend, Universal and Blumhouse’s PG-13 “M3GAN” expects 3,400 North American theaters to bring in $17 million to $20 million. Due to the low production cost of just $12 million, those ticket sales would mark a promising beginning.

In January, which is usually a quiet month for movies, “M3GAN” hopes to act as counterprogramming. However, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” directed by James Cameron, will outshine the pint-sized terrorist. For the fourth week in a row, domestic box office charts are expected to be dominated. The blockbuster sequel from Disney and 20th Century Fox is expected to drop 50% over the weekend, putting its estimated three-day total between $30 million and $35 million.

In North America, “The Way of Water” has grossed $446 million after three weeks, surpassing “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” which made 440 million dollars, was the second-highest-grossing 2022 film. “Top Gun: Maverick” holds the top spot in the United States with $718 million.

However, with $1 billion overseas and $1.5 billion worldwide, “Avatar 2” has surpassed Tom Cruise’s most recent blockbuster to become the biggest 2022 release. It is anticipated that “The Way of Water” will continue its towering run into the new year despite the lack of significant competition.

Horror fans need not worry. In theaters, Pandora won’t completely drain the air supply. The film “M3GAN,” directed by Gerard Johnstone, already seems like it will greatly benefit from word of mouth. Due to her incredible choreography and overall chaotic energy, the robotic doll has become a viral sensation and meme queen prior to its release. With clever marketing strategies like groups of dancing dolls at the film’s premiere, Universal and Blumhouse have capitalized on the enthusiasm.

Co-starring Allison Williams and Violet McGraw, “M3GAN” is about a life-like AI creation that is programmed to be the ideal companion for a girl who just lost her parents. However, given that it is ultimately a horror film about a doll with a demonic appearance, it is probably safe to assume that things worsen.
