Ming-Chi Kuo on iOS 18: High-level AI Capabilities might not be Available at Launch

Industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo discusses his opinions on iOS 18 and other major developments that Apple plans to reveal at WWDC24, which takes place just before the event. The business is reportedly developing AI capabilities for upcoming Apple products. Kuo reiterates that the business is set to reveal several AI features. On June 10 (today), at 10:30 PM IST, the WWDC24 keynote presentation will begin.

Kuo thinks Apple is going to include strong features in all facets of iOS 18 and its system apps. “As we’ve previously revealed, the corporation is planning a significant update for Siri, its AI assistant.” The 8GB memory size, Kuo points out, is insufficient for the huge language model, which will limit the possibilities of the on-device AI operations. To clarify, Apple plans to integrate both server-side and local language models for its AI functionalities.

Phased Rollouts of Server-Side AI Functionality are Possible

It’s worth noting that Kuro does not view Apple’s advancements in AI as groundbreaking. But in the long run, he believes Apple’s significant recent investments in AI and machine learning will be profitable. The amount of iPhone 16 series shipments in Q2 2024 might be little less than it was in the same period the previous year, based on his analysis.

In addition, the server-side LLMs require more time to train than the on-device smaller models. Kuo suggests that the more sophisticated server-dependent functions might not be released all at once with the iPhone 16 series, but rather implemented gradually over time. According to reports, the more sophisticated AI features will only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro models, as well as the iPhone 16 series and higher.

Apple’s partnership with OpenAI and Google for server-side AI features has already been reported. In regards to AI, Kuo, however, minimized the significance of collaborations with other businesses. He thinks Apple’s collaboration will mostly center on the “encapsulation model” of communication between the user and the program.
