As electronic dance music has become a top favorite all over the world, many are pursuing a professional career in DJ’ing rather than to just do it as a hobby. However, some naysayers spread a lot of hate around this lifestyle. DJ J Star has made a name for himself, not only in the nightclub scene but also with renowned music outlets such as Pitbull’s Sirius XM ch. 13.
He is going to give us a piece of his mind on the controversial stereotypes that revolve around being a DJ.
“A very common thing you hear is that it’s a nonserious profession with no more pop growth prospects. I beg to differ as DJ’ing has led me to corporate clients and partnerships with well know sports teams. If this is not professionalism, I don’t know what is”, says DJ J Star. He has a long list of huge brands that are his clients. Jack Daniels, Nike, Dropbox, Adidas, and HBO are just some of the names. The DJ has also done partnerships with professional league sports teams such as the New York Knicks and the New York Nets. He often plays at their events.
“The next thing I’m tired of hearing is that all DJs are just in it for the drugs and alcohol. I won’t be denying the fact that liquor is the main part of the nightlife and some bad eggs even accept alcohol as payment for performing at a party. This still does not give anyone the right to stereotype us all, some of us have gone to college to pursue this passion. Don’t sell us so short,” adds DJ J Star. He is a graduate of the Institute of Audio Research (IAR) in audio engineering. This was a result of his sheer determination and high aims towards his professional life as a DJ.
This inspirational young man has worked at radio stations such as 103.5 KTU, Hot 97, and Iheart Radio Power 105.1. He now does a weekly show at Sirius XM ch. 13 that is heard all over the world. His family was from the Dominican Republic and had always supported his love for music and passion to turn it into paychecks. DJ J Star has not only made his family proud but has also become an example of how many people are wrong about DJ’ing.
“At the end of the day, I stay true to my values and enjoy myself as much as I can. That’s my secret”, he says in the end. It is true as DJ J Star performs in about ten events a week in the tri-state area. His music is a mix of Salsa, House, Rock, Hip Hop, and other genres.
You can listen to his mixes on Mixcloud or every Saturday at 12p EST on Sirius XM. Ch 13. Follow him on Instagram @djjstar.
