Samsung debuted a number of new AI-powered features for the Galaxy S24 series two days ago. Strong NPUs found in the Exynos 2400 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 For Galaxy processors in those phones power the majority of these functionalities. Real-time language translation for voice calls and messages is one of such functions.
Although the business demonstrated text message language translation via the integrated Messages app, it appears that WhatsApp is also supported.
WhatsApp is also compatible with Galaxy AI’s language translation feature on the Galaxy S24.
Additionally, it looks that the real-time language translation capability from the Galaxy AI suite is functional on the third-party messaging service WhatsApp (via @sondesix). The graphic above illustrates how communications sent in Korean are converted into English and vice versa. Uncertainty surrounds whether WhatsApp’s live language translation capability has been applied to the Galaxy S24 or whether it is compatible with other messaging apps.
On the Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24+, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, according to Samsung, language translation can function in real-time on-device (without requiring an active internet connection). Furthermore, based on what we’ve seen at Galaxy Unpacked, language processing appears to happen rather quickly. Over the past year, this feature has also been available on Pixel devices, and it may soon be available on further phones that have potent NPUs built in.
According to Samsung, in the first half of this year, some of those AI-powered capabilities may be added to current high-end Galaxy devices. The business hasn’t disclosed which aspects of the One UI 6.1 update would be made available to owners of current devices, though.
